How AI Is Changing Higher Education
Artificial intelligence is transforming the way students find information, develop ideas and complete assignments. With effective prompting, they can create drafts and access knowledge within seconds. This speed creates both opportunities and difficult questions for higher education.
If AI can perform many traditional learning tasks, what knowledge should students still develop themselves? How should universities and schools assess learning? And how can teachers make sure submitted work genuinely reflects the student’s understanding?
Education cannot introduce one AI policy and expect it to remain relevant for years. The technology is developing too quickly. Institutions must regularly review their curriculum, assessments and expectations while remaining clear about the fundamental knowledge students still need.
The challenge is not simply deciding whether students should use AI. It is teaching them how to use it without losing their expertise, judgement or personal voice.
Why Curriculum Must Evolve With AI
AI is changing every industry, and education is no different. Students entering higher education will encounter AI tools in their studies and future workplaces, so the curriculum must prepare them for that reality.
However, curriculum reform should not involve replacing foundational learning with technology. Educators first need to identify what remains essential within each course.
They should consider:
- What knowledge is fundamental to the subject?
- Which skills are non-negotiable?
- Where can AI save students time?
- Which activities help students develop genuine expertise?
- What must students understand before they can evaluate AI output?
- How can technology improve learning without replacing it?
The answers will vary across different subjects. A tool that creates useful efficiencies in one course may weaken an important learning process in another.
Curriculum change should therefore begin with the purpose of education. AI can support that purpose, but it should not determine it.
Some Knowledge Must Remain Non-Negotiable
AI can provide information quickly, but students still need foundational knowledge. Without it, they may not recognise whether an AI-generated answer is accurate, incomplete or unsuitable.
A student who understands the subject can review an AI response, identify errors and ask better follow-up questions. Someone without that knowledge may accept the output simply because it sounds confident and polished.
This is why some content remains non-negotiable. Students need knowledge, experience and expertise to use AI effectively.
Education must help them understand the difference between receiving an answer and genuinely knowing a subject. AI may improve efficiency, but it cannot remove the need for informed human judgement.
The central curriculum question is not, “Can AI do this task?” It is, “What does the student need to learn by doing this task?”
If an activity develops essential knowledge or judgement, removing it may weaken the student’s education, even if AI can complete it faster.
Education May Need to Pivot Every Six Months
AI is evolving too quickly for education providers to rely on policies designed to last several years without review.
Schools and universities may need to reconsider their approach every six months. This does not mean rewriting the entire curriculum twice a year. It means regularly reviewing how students use AI, whether assessment methods remain effective and where new tools are changing learning.
Education leaders should repeatedly ask:
- What has changed?
- What are students now able to do with AI?
- Are current assessments still meaningful?
- Which learning activities remain valuable?
- Where are students using AI responsibly?
- How can teaching be improved?
This process requires time and reflection. Institutions must remain flexible while protecting the essential purpose of learning.
A fixed response to AI is unlikely to work. Education needs a clear foundation combined with the ability to adapt as the technology develops.
Rethinking Assessment in the Age of AI
Assessment and plagiarism are among the biggest concerns surrounding AI in education. Take-home assignments are particularly easy to complete with generative AI, making it harder to determine what a student genuinely knows.
Good teachers often recognise how their students normally write and communicate. When submitted work suddenly uses unfamiliar language or demonstrates a completely different level of ability, the mismatch can be noticeable.
Assessment methods need to help teachers confirm that students understand the work they submit. This does not necessarily mean banning take-home assignments, but it may require additional ways of demonstrating knowledge.
These could include conversations about the work, opportunities to explain decisions or comparisons with the student’s usual classroom performance.
The purpose should not be limited to catching students using AI. Assessment should encourage them to demonstrate genuine understanding, take responsibility for their work and use technology in ways that support rather than replace learning.
Can Teachers Recognise AI-Generated Assignments?
Teachers often know their students’ normal writing style, vocabulary and level of understanding. This familiarity can help them identify work that appears inconsistent with the student’s usual performance.
A fully AI-generated assignment may be polished, but it can lack the student’s personal voice. It may use language they would not normally choose or present ideas they cannot explain independently.
However, detecting AI-generated content is not always straightforward. A capable student can take an AI draft, review it carefully and blend it into their own work.
That is where AI can add real value. The goal is not for students to hide their use of technology. It is for them to use it thoughtfully, applying their knowledge and ensuring the final work accurately represents what they understand.
Authentic work should sound like the student, reflect their judgement and be suitable for the specific purpose of the assignment.
Prompt Crafting Alone Is Not Learning
Creating an effective prompt is a useful skill, but it is not enough on its own.
A student can ask AI to produce a complete document, yet the result may sound nothing like them. It may also contain incorrect information, miss important context or fail to meet the purpose of the assignment.
Students need to move beyond generating content. They should be able to:
- Review the output critically
- Check whether the information is correct
- Identify what is missing
- Rewrite unsuitable sections
- Apply their subject knowledge
- Add relevant context
- Maintain their own voice
- Explain and defend the final work
Prompt crafting can provide a starting point, but the student must remain responsible for the outcome.
Education should teach young people to treat AI output as material to assess and develop, not as finished work that can be submitted without thought.
The Real Value Comes From Blending AI With Human Knowledge
AI may bring a piece of work 80 per cent of the way towards completion. The student’s responsibility is to examine that foundation and add what the technology cannot provide.
This includes personal understanding, specific knowledge of the situation, informed judgement and an authentic voice.
The strongest student work will not necessarily avoid AI. Instead, it will use AI to improve efficiency while preserving the thinking that makes the work meaningful.
This is where the real value of AI appears. The technology can support the process, but the student contributes accuracy, context and purpose.
Teaching this approach is not easy. It requires educators to help students understand both the capabilities and limitations of AI. Students must learn that a polished document is not automatically a strong piece of work.
Quality depends on whether the final result is correct, relevant, authentic and fit for purpose.
Preparing Students for an AI-Supported Future
Higher education must prepare students for a world where AI will be part of many professions. Prohibition alone will not achieve that goal.
Students need opportunities to use AI while still developing foundational knowledge and expertise. They must learn when technology can improve productivity and when deeper human thinking is required.
Education providers should focus on three connected areas:
- Protecting the fundamental knowledge students need
- Teaching responsible and critical use of AI
- Designing assessments that demonstrate authentic understanding
This approach recognises that AI is a tool rather than a replacement for education.
The future of learning will depend on balance. Students should benefit from faster access to information without losing the experience of thinking, questioning and developing expertise.
Technology will continue to change, but the need for knowledge, judgement and human understanding will remain.
