From Doubt to Purpose: How Faith, Adversity and Reflection Shape True Leadership
Topics Discovered: Faith and leadership, personal transformation, military life, resilience, purpose-driven living, values and belief systems
In this conversation with guest Hon Phil Twiss MLC, hosted by Dev Singh, we explore a deeply personal journey one that moves from doubt and frustration to faith, purpose, and leadership grounded in values. It is a story that resonates far beyond religion; it speaks to identity, growth, and the human search for meaning.

A Search for Something More
Stephen’s early life reflects a familiar tension. Raised in a mixed religious environment an Anglican mother and Catholic schooling he ultimately rejected belief in God during his teenage years. At 14, when asked if he wished to be confirmed, he declined. Not out of rebellion, but from a place of honest disbelief.
Yet beneath that rejection was a deeper question what else is out there?
By the age of 16, Stephen had joined the Navy. Like many young recruits, he found himself navigating not only discipline and duty but also internal struggles. He describes himself candidly as “an angry young man,” caught between routine behaviours and a growing awareness that life held more than what he was experiencing.

The Turning Point: A Moment of Clarity
Everything shifted during a Navy-led character development retreat. It wasn’t a religious event by design but it became a life altering experience.
There, Stephen encountered a chaplain, Brian Daniels, whose calm presence stood in stark contrast to his own inner turbulence. What struck him was not doctrine, but demeanour.
That led to a simple yet profound question:
“What is it that you have that I don’t have?”
The answer faith opened a door Stephen had not expected to walk through. Through conversation and reflection, he began to explore belief in Jesus, not as an abstract idea, but as a lived experience grounded in accountability, forgiveness, and renewal.
This was not a dramatic overnight transformation but it was real. Even small changes, like his sudden shift away from habitual swearing, became markers of a deeper internal change.
Faith Tested Through Adversity
Stephen’s journey was far from smooth. Shortly after embracing his faith, he faced a legal incident that challenged both his character and his beliefs.
At 19, he was involved in an altercation that resulted in a conviction for property damage. Despite taking responsibility and offering restitution, the situation escalated. It was a humbling experience one that forced him to confront the gap between belief and behaviour.
Importantly, this moment did not derail his faith it refined it.
It highlighted a critical truth: faith is not about perfection, but perseverance.
When Beliefs Are Challenged
Later in life, Stephen pursued studies in philosophy an experience he describes as deeply unsettling. Ideas he had accepted without question were suddenly examined, challenged, and in some cases dismantled.
This period represents something many leaders encounter: the collision between inherited beliefs and critical thinking.
Rather than abandoning his faith, Stephen chose to engage with the challenge. It took years, but through reflection and intellectual honesty, he rebuilt a belief system that was not only inherited but understood.
Leadership Rooted in Values
What emerges from Stephen’s story is not simply a religious journey, but a leadership philosophy grounded in:
- Self-awareness
- Accountability
- Reflection
- Purpose
His experience in the Navy, combined with personal setbacks and philosophical inquiry, shaped a leadership style that is both resilient and values-driven.
In today’s rapidly changing world where uncertainty, pressure, and ethical complexity are constant this kind of grounded leadership is more important than ever.
Why This Matters Today
Stephen’s journey reminds us that:
- Purpose is often discovered through struggle, not comfort
- Beliefs must be tested to become truly meaningful
- Leadership begins with understanding oneself
Whether in the military, business, or community life, the most impactful leaders are those who have done the inner work.
