Sallyanne Atkinson AO is an Australian trailblazer known for her pioneering roles in politics and diplomacy. Born in 1942, she became the first female Lord Mayor of Brisbane, serving from 1985 to 1991.
Early Career
Trained as a journalist and a mother of five, Atkinson entered politics with the Liberal Party, working as a research assistant before her election as alderman in 1979. She authored books like Sallyanne Atkinson’s Brisbane Guide and balanced family with public service.
Diplomatic Roles
Atkinson served as Australia’s Senior Trade Commissioner to France (Paris) from 1994 to 1997, promoting exports and investment while representing Australia at the International Chamber of Commerce. She later acted as Queensland’s Special Representative in South East Asia.
Later Achievements
Awarded Officer of the Order of Australia in 1993, she contributed to Olympic bids, including Sydney 2000, and held board roles at organisations like the Museum of Brisbane. Atkinson remains active as a speaker, mentor, and director.
