What I Learnt About Life Through Travel

Travel With Purpose: Why the Richest Journeys Are Never on the Itinerary

Many travellers see journeys as a checklist—landmarks to visit, restaurants to try, and photos to capture. However, the real magic of travelling goes beyond the itinerary. It lies in the purpose, intention, and connections we create along the way.

On my recent trip to Perth, Western Australia, I realised that travel is less about what you plan to see and more about how you experience it. The city’s stunning beaches and lively urban spaces were memorable. Yet, it was the people, friends, and unexpected moments that truly shaped the journey.

The Power of Human Connection in Travel

What stayed with me most were the genuine encounters. For instance, a casual book tour led to an inspiring conversation with a local author. Likewise, a family stay turned into an unforgettable cultural exchange. By staying open, I discovered sides of Perth that no traditional guidebook could reveal.

This reminded me of something important: a true traveller’s first aid kit goes beyond insurance and hand sanitisers. It includes an open mind, honest communication, and a willingness to embrace the unplanned. In fact, some of the best memories arrive unannounced—in a chat at a coffee shop or in the quiet charm of an unnoticed side street.

Intentional Travel: More Than Just “Where” You Go

Travelling with intention means pausing to connect with people, culture, and place—rather than rushing from one attraction to another. Therefore, it is worth asking yourself:

  • What do I hope to learn from this journey?
  • How can I engage with the community in a respectful way?
  • Which moments will stay with me long after I return home?

The answers often surprise us. As a result, each trip becomes more than a dot on the map—it becomes a meaningful chapter in our life story.

Embracing Unplanned Journeys and Future Pathways

Just as travel requires openness, leadership also calls for adaptability. Both involve courage—the courage to face the unknown. Whether forming new friendships abroad or guiding an organisation through technological change, an open and intentional mindset makes the difference.

Meanwhile, an equally important journey awaits leaders in Australia. This one focuses not on destinations but on future readiness.
