Dr Ashley McGrath: Gender Equity Became a Mission

From Fairness to Impact: A Journey into Gender Equity Leadership

In a world where conversations around diversity and inclusion are growing louder, the real challenge lies not in why change is needed—but in how to make it happen. This is the story of a journey shaped by a deep-rooted belief in fairness, sharpened through professional experience, and transformed into meaningful action through research and leadership.

The Early Roots: A Natural Sense of Fairness

For some, purpose emerges later in life. For others, it is quietly present from the very beginning.

A strong sense of fairness ensuring people are treated with respect, dignity, and equality often starts in simple environments like the school playground. These early moments, though small, shape how individuals perceive justice and human interaction.

This intrinsic value becomes a guiding force. It evolves from standing up for fairness in everyday situations to advocating for broader systemic change.

The Turning Point: Recognising a Real-World Gap

The real shift often comes through lived experience.

Working within the recruitment industry in Australia, a recurring theme began to surface in conversations with organisations:

  • “We want to hire more women.”
  • “We don’t know where to start.”
  • “We’ve tried, but it hasn’t worked.”

These weren’t isolated comments they reflected a widespread organisational challenge. There was a clear desire for gender diversity, but a significant gap in execution.

This is where purpose meets opportunity.

Rather than accepting the gap, the question became:
How do we bridge it?

From Reflection to Action

Sometimes, personal life transitions create the space needed for clarity. A period of reflection and change can unlock renewed mental and physical energy fuel for transformation.

Through exploration and curiosity, a pathway emerged: pursuing a PhD.

What stood out during this journey was a powerful concept
A PhD is not about knowing everything; it’s about solving a specific gap.

By connecting this academic principle with real-world observations, a clear direction formed:

  • Focus on gender equity
  • Ground it in practical industry challenges
  • Build solutions that organisations can actually use

Why Gender Equity?

Gender was not chosen by chance.

It is one of the most visible and widely discussed aspects of diversity, yet still deeply misunderstood in practice. Beyond supporting women, gender equity also involves recognising:

  • Structural barriers
  • Workplace norms
  • Expectations placed on different genders

By narrowing the focus to a specific industry mining in Western Australia the research became not only relevant but actionable.

This micro focused approach allowed for:

  • Deeper insights
  • Practical recommendations
  • Real impact on organisations struggling with implementation

Bridging the “Intent vs Action” Gap

One of the most important insights from this journey is this:

Many organisations genuinely want to improve gender diversity. However, without clear strategies, tools, and understanding, those intentions remain unrealised.

Bridging this gap requires:

  • Evidence-based approaches
  • Clear frameworks
  • Leadership commitment
  • Continuous learning and adaptation

This is where research, lived experience, and purpose driven leadership intersect.

A Journey That Continues

What began as a personal value fairness has evolved into a professional mission:
to help organisations move from intention to impact in gender equity.

It is a journey defined by curiosity, resilience, and a refusal to ignore gaps where change is possible.

And importantly, it is a journey that is far from over.
